Chapter Eight

Anabelle

Back at Mable’s house, I stuff my clothes into my suitcase. Suddenly, Havendoor feels confined. I need to go home.

“What happened?” Mable sits on my bed, her guest bed.

“Nothing. Well, lots of things. I just have to go.” I roll my sundress and stuff it in the bag.

Mable leans back on the pillow. “You had a nice evening?”

It was a perfect night. The afternoon, making love, the dinner, and sleeping in his arms. “Yes. It was a lovely evening.”

“Where have you been all day?”

I can’t find my other shoe. Getting on my hands and knees, I look under the bed. “Declan had to work. I went with him to Ithaca.”

“I see.” She sounds disappointed.

My shoe is on the other side of the bed. I crawl around and grab it, then stuff both in the suitcase. “I knew what he did. It shouldn’t have upset me.”

“But it did.”

With a bounce, I sit on the edge of the bed. “It’s terrible and also not. I don’t know. Everything I appreciated about what he did during Poppy’s final night made me ill at a stranger’s home.”

“Maybe that’s only because your grandfather died so recently. If you care for Declan, why not stay and talk to him?” Mable always sounds like things are simple, even when they’re not.

Standing, I lean over and kiss her cheek. “I need to get back to work. I’ve been here long enough. Maybe in a few weeks, I’ll call him.”

Sighing, Mable stands and follows me out to my car. “Call me when you get home.”

“I will. Thank you for letting me stay.” I toss my bags in the back seat and hug her.

She squeezes me tight. “You’ll always have a place here with me. Drive safe.”

“I will. Thank you.” Unable to keep the tears away, I race down the driveway without looking back. I slow while making my way through town, and once I hit the highway, relief and dread flood through me in equal measure.

Focusing on going back to work and the clients, I’ve neglected these two weeks, I turn the radio up and push aside all things Declan Montgomery.
